
Peniche is located on a "Tombolo" (tiny peninsula) of about 10 km in perimeter, with the Cape Carvoeiro. The coast is formed by imposing cliffs and beautiful beaches. the ocean in a constant parade of amazing views to the visitors.
The county of Peniche has a long and rich history, having been successively occupied by people. The fishing and agriculture are the main economic activities. The Archeology gives us today to know the portrait of a territory that the Roman assumed a pivotal position in the context of an inter-regional commercial navigation, welcoming their anchorages and any port structures, vessels, some of large tonnage (as seems be proven by the discovery in Berlenga of two blocks of lead anchor at about 2.55 and 2.63 m. and 423 and 422 kg respectively), carrying amphorae bottled products as Andalusian wine, canned fish or the Lusitania.
Peniche has several miles of coastline where you can find a variety of beaches of fine sand and clear waters that reach to have stretches of several miles. The city is built on a peninsula that has the most westerly point of Portugal: the Carvoeiro Cape.
This is where we find the islands of Berlengas, located about 11 miles west of Cape Carvoeiro. This archipelago is now a nature reserve where rare species of birds, fish and flora.
